Understanding the nitrogen cycle is a very valuable tool in fishkeeping.

I agree, too many keepers are clueless about it.

The first thing that you should have done was remove dead fish and immediately test the water. Not buy new fish and check later if you ever at all.

What are your params?

i did immediately remove the dead fish and check the parameters down my local shop, i also I in actual fact did a water test a week earlier with my own test kit. I was very careful and will continue to be so by checking my water every Sunday. I realize that i should not have got the 3 new bala sharks as I have lost all my Balas. I'm going to now wait till I buy a new tank before I get anything else.

GG's seem to have to a problem with silver fish.....I had a similar issue and re-homed the GG.

So what were the results of the tests and what did you do to corect the problems if any?
You have to give us more info so we can better assist you:screwy:

I took the dead fish out, got the perimeters tested at the local store. Apparently my Nitrate and Ammonia were very high. I stopped feeding them for about 3 days, did a 50 percent water change, used safe start directly to my fx5 to speed up the process and added aqua safe to the new water to neutralize the PH. Then I did 2 more 25% water changes that week added safe start at set intervals and got my water tested every day or to. Now i'm getting my water tested weekly and doing a weekly water change. By the way, with ref to GG's not liking silver fish do you mean they show aggression towards them? I would like more bala's and a new arowana when I get my bigger tank and wonder if there is a way to make it work????

I would start by studying the stickies
thoroughly
