G'day all,
After a fishing trip recently, i have decided i want to keep some local salt water fish.
I was planning on doing a fish only tank, and wondering what filtation i would use?. the tank i'm planning is a 120 gallon 4x2x2.
I'm going to keep a couple yellow tail bream, and some other smaller fish in it. Can i skip sump filtration or is that my main way of
filtering it?. The tank in question is already a freshwater with two canisters on it, a jebo 1200l/h and a Eheim pro3. Can i just
use these combined with a skimmer or am i doomed to a sump?. Cheers all.

I have the same dimension tank and am also a beginner to marine fish keeping and I would advise you to get a sump and just use a sock to capture the bad **** and maybe put some carbon and then if you choose you can easily add a sump

A sump will help you out a lot but is by no means necessary. I use 2 HOB filters on a 55 gallon, and 4 HOB filters on a 135 gallon.
I do highly recommend a good protein skimmer and powerheads (water movement is important). I use lots of live rock, sometimes over a lb per gallon.

I don't know how true it is, but I've been told not to use canister filters on SW tanks, something about them being a Nitrate trap, but I've never tried using one on a SW tank so I cannot say, but like JASamper said a sock will prevent them from being clogged if you do use them.

You need a protein skimmer which goes in a sump but you can also buy ones that's don't go in tanks you will also need a uv sterilizer. And you can use any filter you would use for a freshwater tank

canisters can be used, just dont use your regular media. rather than all of the stuff you would usually use just stick live rock rubble in there for biological filtration and stick a filter sock over the intake. sump and uv sterilizer is unnecessary. Get good flow from some nice circulation pumps, get you a quality Hang on Back Skimmer, and let her rip

Do you mean like, buy live rock, and smash it up?.
Thanks, you just saved my life. Haha

you can do that, or typically fish stores if you ask for live rock rubble will have some on hand, just stick it in the trays like you would your ceramics. Just one of the two canisters should be fine for extra bio filtration. hope this helps! and don't skimp on the protein skimmer!
