I was starting to do a water change to my tank at work on Friday when we had some altercation at work that I had to go handle. After a half hour of taking care of this problem and wanting to throw this kid through a wall, I forgot about my water change. I unplugged everything, so the filter has been off since friday afternoon. It's now sunday morning. There are a dozen guppies in the tank. My concern is that I may have killed the beneficial bacteria that I was building up and I dont want to start all over. Is there a chance that it is all still ready to go after I swap this water out tomorrow?

Theres nothing running in the tank since friday? heaters , no bubbler even ? If so , then im not even sure if the guppies are still alive. But if there was a bubbler, there are still beneficial bacterial in the substrate but the majority in the filter would have died off already.

could do some bio spira do jump start things again that stuff works great

The filter bacteria is certainly dead. They bacteria gives off toxins when they die. Your filter is full of poison now. Time to rinse it clean and start over.

i'll put money on the guppies being alive. they can live in toilet water as far as i've seen. they were just for bacteria. so i gotta start all over. I knew that was the deal. im gonna get that stuff you mentioned, thanks.

yeah i figured as much. i was just praying that I was wrong. damn.

If you had gravel in the tank you might be a-ok. just clean out the filter. Then stir up the gravel real good to get the bacteria sucked into the filter. The bacteria in the tank should be alive if the fish are.

Howdy,

That sucks! Yeah, you need to clean your filter real well. There should be enough bacteria left in the tank to populate your filter again. Thus, it's not a full "start over"....

good luck,
