This video an angler in Indonesia a caught a nice big clown loach and sold it US$ 44.!
What a nice specimen and judging from the river where it was caught its rather fast flowing.
Interesting to watch.!
I understand the Malay language very well !
In Indonesia the clown loach goes by the name "ikan botia"

Wow nice catch and for the angler $44 US is probably good money for him.

I find it very hard to believe that clown loach would sell for anywhere near $44.00 US. In fact, impossible to believe, unless it's to a private hobbyist. In Indo clown loaches sell for next to nothing.

At the wholesale level CL's are dirt cheap, 3-4" CL's cost as little as $1-2 US in Indonesia.

by all means leave it hanging and let it smack its head into the weight...
if that cl was at my lfs it'd be $440.00
Yeah really. The way that the fish was handled makes me wonder if it was intended to be eaten rather than kept as a pet.

Considering the fact that CL's are not typically caught on hook & line, for the aquatic trade, I would think the same. Smells like loach, tastes like chicken!

RD. RD. you will surprised clown loaches here in Singapore small 1.5-2inch goes for $3-4 which is abt US$2.20 - 2.90 abt US3 each for a 2inch CL.!
And a 6-7inch can be anywhere between US45-60 sometimes slightly more. And I've heard that it's a law in Indonesia to export a CL more than 3 inches(hope I'm right abt size but definitely there's a law against exporting mature specimens)
One can go to YouTube and click "ikan botia" which is what Indonesians call CL them ! And see lots of videos n it seems there's 1 video they secessfully bred them and another one there's a kind of restocking program all very unclear but I get the impression they're getting harder n harder to get as envoirments are polluted n destroyed etc.
I've seen farms on rivers trying to separate CL from other fish it's like a searching for a GOLD NUGGET amongst other fish !
Think they're getting rarer but also here in Singapore small ones 2-3inch fat nice specimens are not so regularly available only the skinny ones are n also not so common
But if u know where to go(I know) you can get the fat healthy vibrant ones.
One BIG QUESTION ? - For all you CL diehards.!
I've just spotted a batch of lovely FAT high bodied n vibrant looking CL abt 6-7inches in a local fish n I'm definitely getting one next week.
But Im scared of the mixing it with my magnificent 7 CL which are 3.5inches.!
Would there be a problem in compatability? I mean it took months to get my present magnificent 7 to come out of hiding now they're almost respo ding to my hand during feeding! (I shall video this if I can!)
I'm just afraid the mood in my tank amongst the 7 will change !
The big question is has anybody ever put a one CL(I cant put 2 or can I?) double the size of their present stock and face problems.?
The last think I want is they going into hibernation like they did it took me months to get them out ! (I remember my bro in law came over n said hey Bill ! Your tanks empty its got no fish!) it was utterly embarrassing.!
Cheers

The angler in video after hearing him(I understand and speak Malay well) was very confident in offering the guy on motorbike the CL and it seems he quoted the price very confidently and or it all seems he does this regularly for extra income I guess.(the days of CL being cheap are gone!)
I'm going To Bali in mid December holiday with family and rest assured I'll hunt for local fish shops there and if I find nice CL specimens I'll take photos n post here I'm very interested to see the bigger looking specimens !

Bill - read the link I posted, the prices quoted, and most of the info, came from someone who was working in the aquatic industry, on the wholesale side of things. Not some make believe stories on youtube.

In Indo there are size restrictions in place, but the size is 6", not 3", and in Sumatra there is no size restriction, which is why one sees most of the wild caught giant loaches coming out of Sumatra.

What's so surprising about that? That same 3" CL where I live can cost $10+.

Like everything else, for collecting CL's there is a season, and an off season. During the off season CL's will be more expensive as the one being sold are the ones that have been collected when very tiny, and grown out on farms. Prices might be inflated in the shops that you visit in Sing, but in Indo CL's are still dirt cheap. The one in the video appeared to be an illegal catch (6", or over) so perhaps that is the reason why dirtbike boy offered more?

Again, see the link in post # 3, and educate yourself.
