Vieja argentea advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well whatever you do, you have a long time to decide. Argentea grow very slowly. I have 10 growing out, for almost a year, and it's been very slow going. I keep hearing how big they get, but it must take 2 years to get one up to 10-12 inches. They are kinda hard on each other. But, with other species, mine are very solitary. I'd say my biggest one now is 4-6 inches, I can't tell any gender difference between them. Mine go through phases where they won't hardly eat at all, other than lettuce, for a few weeks, then back to eating pellets like normal. I don't know what that's about, but they'll always eat some lettuce. I feed veggies and NLS. They like zuchhini, too. They do seem to guard an unusually large area for such a small fish, so I can see how they would get nasty in a small tank as adults.

If I had to boil it all down to one thing, I'd say they hate each other, but ignore other species. They are act totally different from all other Vieja--solitary in a community tank.

Yeah I mean, for example, we shouldn't put them in the same temperament level as say, Parachromis or Flowerhorns and even if we did, there are still fish that could potentially be placed with them in a tank size of 150 gallons. Despite this, all I can say is they do have the power to knock out all tank mates who cannot compete and will do so if they merely decide it. So feel free to try with the risk of losing some/all stock. Females would stand a better chance, but will likely still come down to the individual.

Tjanks murray I think I will just play it safe and keep it seperate.

I know Duanes said it would be hard to sex them at such a small size but here are a few pics and a vid. Its hard to het them to stay still for the pics all they do is nip at each other and flare up

These two seem to be the most agressive. Not sure if the pics are clear enough but he has a dot that melts into one of the others and the other has 5 distinct blotches with another higher up near the dorsaluploadfromtaptalk1417558304254.jpguploadfromtaptalk1417558327427.jpg

This one is pretty laid back. The blotch near the dorsal is very faded uploadfromtaptalk1417558364137.jpg
