I am going to get a argentea from TUIC, Jeff rapps. I have never had one before, though always really liked them. Can they be breed with other paratheraps? what kind of aquarium do thay need (substrate)? Do they want or need tankmates?

are they cool with each other?

good to know...best to be by himself?

They will easily get 12 inche s and can become very nasty. Sometimes you can find one with an oscars personality but they could have red devil personality also. Very pretty fish as an adult. My male in a 75 grew to 11 inches. He would eat from my hands but would not tolerate tankmates even the plecos.

iv heard they only like 4-5 years.... not worth it if your thinking long term
i doubt that short.

nothing lasts forever. whatever you take of, it lasts longer.

yeah there is no reason that they would only live 4-5 years if taken care of properly. and yeah they eventually get to 14in or more but they are somewhat slower growers, def dont expect the growth of a jag. and yeah from what most people say they do ok when younger but once adults they tend to turn on tankmates. i currently have mine with other aggressive tankmates and he is doing really well but he is less than 6in right now so not nearly grown but i have barely seen any aggression from him and he used to be super shy but now he comes out all the time and him and my festae are the first ones at the top of the tank begging for food when i walk up. so im keeping my fingers crossed that he continues to do well since he has been raised really low in my tank's hierarchy, and if you look at Adhlc's thread about his argentea he keeps his huge arg with small schooling fish and now uncwnells has this fish and he keeps it with angels and everything and it doesn't bother them at all, though i dont know how it would fair if put with other larger cichlids...

but yeah they for sure don't get along with each other, they are super hard to even pair up so def cant be kept with each other as adults unless you are lucky enough to get a pair that doesnt kill each other

slow growers? most viejas are pretty fast growers I believe, my Blackbelt went from 2 inch to 11inch in little over a year.

yeah most are, but at least from my experience and from what i have heard from others, argenteas tend to grow slow for some reason, my guy has taken like 5 months to grow 2-3in and he is one of the higher ranking fish in the tank, i got him when he was about 3in and hes about 5.5in now (just eyeballing i haven't taken him out and measured him recently) though now that he is larger and more confident he has also been able to eat more so maybe now he will have a growth spurt... (fingers crossed) (just for comparison's sake the dominant fish in my tank is a carpintis vontehillo and he has grown from like 1-1.5in to 6in in about the same amount of time, maybe less)

but would def like to hear of others experiences whether their argenteas grew slow or fast
