Looks normal to me, might be a male, they seem to have fewer dark markings.
The markings are how I determine gender, and the band can come in and out.
male in the fore ground below

This is what he looked like when I first got him. Had three of them and then chose the best looking one.

I give Duanes his credit and in my opinion he's far better then I at ID'ing. Still I'll give my reasons as to my perhaps flawed opinion.

I totally missed MrHagel's post but I agree with him over my original post it looks like some Regani hybrid, perhaps with Argentea. I could totally be wrong but that's just the way it appears to me. Perhaps it's the lighting but the colors on the body seem to have a green sheen and the spots look red characteristics of a Regani. Though as MrHagel said the spot just before the tail is very prominent which is a characteristic of Argentea so it's a tough call, for me at least. Can I ask where you got them? And do you know the source of that source?

Hopefully more people who have more experience with Vieja will chime in. I've only kept Regani and Argentea twice myself and my latest Argentea is in the vid above and this was my last Regani. The Regani looks blue cause of my lighting but you can see the red spots and his red mask which is very subdued a characteristic of most Regani I've seen. Though it's true I've seen dominant male Argentea with big nuchal bumps with a barely noticeable mask.

I love the fish but do not like hybrids. The spots arent red but the missing mask had me worried I got them from shark aquarium which I along with other members thought it was a mislabled tsnk that did say regani. I am gonna give them a call too. Wish I could post picks will try and add a link from another forum

Want to hear something funny, the Argentea in my first vid was incorrectly labeled as a Regani in Shark Aquarium and I picked him up maybe a month or two ago. I strolled into Shark Aquarium immediately upon them opening and bought the Argentea which was labeled as a Regani. The lights in the tank where off and my mind was on another fish I picked up that day and I totally missed the fact he was an Argentea till I got home.

Dude we have the same fish the tank was along the back wall right ?

I know im being a pain but can you guys take a look at the pics in the link I posted best ones are on page 7

Mine was kept singly in a small tank against the back wall where they keep the Piranha. They used to keep P's in there but more recently larger cichlids and mine was next to I believe a single Texas and Synspilum.

I looked at the last pics, in those pics they do look like Argentea. The black spots are easier to make out.

I know exactly what your talking about he was 4 or 5 inches right
