in peten the melanurus all looked the same but i do remember in belize i believe in orange walk they differed in color significantly along with meeki..
The cichlid world is full of contradictions.
Some that look alike are the same species, some that look alike aren't
Take Chuco intermedia
The ones above and below are the same species, just from different river systems (not that far apart)
Different colors, and even slightly different body shape.
But the fish below are two different species
Above Herichthys carpintus, yet below H tamasopoensus
Another similar type look alike from Madagascar but separate species
Paratilapia polleni above, Paratilapia andapa below
