Vieja synspilum colours

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well you picked top of the line when you referred to joosterand YouTube video. Synspilums will produce good color without doing anything special as long as they have very good water and feeding.

Some quality breeds will start to show gold body and a maroon head at 1.5-3". But, these guys still take a year or more to reach their mature colors. The Belize Race looks nice. I would buy from a reputable source, or buy fry from fish (Parents) that have nice traits.

Mine started to color-up at around 4" and 9 months of age.(sexually matured). Past that point, good water, food and tank conditions will allow the species to maintain its color. Here are three pics of my 2 year olds.

thanks for all the info and pics....u guys got some nice fish out there. im totally aware of good water and good food.....im living abroad at the moment and had to give my fish to a friend till i return home. i had a 3.5 yr old oscar who got to 40cm.... unfortunately he passed away from a bacterial infection in his stomach 3 month after i left. My fish usually have a wider variety of food in my house then i do.

Here is my syn at 6". They do get lite in color when stresses. Mine had decent color when I bought her (think it is a female), but I can't remember the size. All I know is that they grow fast.
Mine is pretty peaceful and very interactive like an Oscar. She will take food right from my hand.

When you get back to Sydney send me a pm , I might be able to help you out with some decent synspilum . I agree that synspilum colour up more as they get older etc , but if you see a group of decent synspilum in a tank even at 2 inchs there is normally a male or two starting to show some red and yellow in the body.
There are lots of crappy mixed synspilum in OZ.
