vieja synspilum help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
1mm should be fine for 2.5" syns. Try presoaking them using tank water, for 30mins or so, to help with soften the hard texture

Best to find out what the previous owner or store fed the fish with. Fish that are used to eat one type of fish will not readily switch to eat another food, so there is some adjustment period. Most fish will accept NLS pellets. If 1 mm are still too big, use a roller to ground it down to powder.
Unfortunately I got my fish from Aquabid... I emailed him asking what he fed him at first but at the same time at asking i was telling him about how the fish came with ich and that he shouldnt wrap the heat pack in so much newspaper... i feel like i may have embarrased him/her thinking that i wanted a refund... i quickly cured the ich problem and they are sorta eating(they spit out the flakes asap)... but regardless i cant get in touch with the original seller. as for the pellets... my ebjds dont eat them either :/

Flake food is for cichlid fry, not for growing cichlids in the long run. You have to start training your cichlid to eat pellets, starting with ground up pellets if the are too big.

as for the pellets... my ebjds dont eat them either :/

Its a new food, so they'll get use to it. try feeding them every other day in small portion until they start eating it. Then you can feed regularly with a larger portion

Noted. I will slowly ween them off the flakes starting now. I made a big commitment when buying the flakes.. But I'm starting to run out as well.. I'll get them on pellets tonight. I feed them 2x a day

Synspillum are considered omnivores, not particularly carnivorous, and not at all piscivores, so feeders are not a good idea. They will suck down terrestrial and aquatic insects and crustaceans that are small enough, but about 50% of their diet should be veggy based, the spirulina pellets might just need a little pre-soak if very hard (as stated above), and you may find thawed peas in some tank water might perk up their appetite. I use HBH super soft spirulina pellets, and find some of the high vitamin foods made for koi work well to bring out color. Attaching some romaine leaves and sinking them were always a hit with my Vieja/Paraneetroplus types.

I have a Synspilum, he's kinda picky about food, too. He won't touch NLS cichlid pellets. He likes Hikari sinking wafers, API algae tabs, and freeze dried Krill. He likes zucchini and green leaf lettuce, won't touch romaine lettuce. won't touch my Java Fern, Anubias, or Vallisneria. He also likes New Era Plec Pellets.

Mine eats all foods I've tried but log s romaine lettuce and hikari cichlid excel. I keep him in planted tank along with sevs, heckellii and a bellycrawler.

oh right. this is a good time to try out some biogold+! i really wanted to try them except i need to wait until they are large enough. i'll get them on some growth pellets as well.. this way they'll grow faster.... So my current diet is NLS thera A+, Kens fish earthworm flakes, Spiriluna flakes, and kens growth pellets.
