gorgeous fish, one of the better examples I've seen of the species!
Awesome Melanura indeed. They are great cichlids. Mine spawned back in November. Male was big around 10.5 inches and female was around 6.5. They were general giants to their tank mates for many months, until they spawned. Then everyone had to be removed. Their rainbow colors are so awesome. Your camera and photography skills are sweet!!
Wow I can’t wait till my son’s get that big. We 15-20 different sizes. I bought an 180 gallon just to set my son’s sought American cichlids. Thx for sharing pictures
Thx for sharing. Incredible transformation! At what point did the male characteristics start showing. I am growing one out that is currently similar to your 4/2019 stage.
Very nice. I got some F1 Belize synspilum from COA and they were always super skiddish from the beginning and even until now when I approach the tank but have a male that is turning out amazing with a hump as well. He’s paired up. I got them at around 3” earlier this year and are now 8-9” id say but still sadly very skittish which I’ve never had before with any vieja species. I recently put them in my large show tank so hopefully soon enough they’ll call down
Depends on different factors but color should come in pretty quickly but the head takes time. As noted, it took mine 3 years to develop a hump. The post right above took less.
