ford had allot of issues with the C5, mostly due to the solenoid pin being hardened steal ridding into an aluminum housing. 1st to 2nd would start rushing until it burned the bands or you got it fixed. they made a fix you could get to with out pulling the tranny, basically a seal sleeve around the solenoid pin.

I can only comment on my full sized Dodge and GMC. I bought both brand new, mechanically had much better luck with the GMC and ran both over 200,000; just my GMC required much less in repairs. My only issue was the wiring on the GMC, seemed to be crappy. I did have a Chevy S10 back in high school and ran that truck over 200k on original motor and tranny.
The sad thing is i love the look and the idea of American trucks and muscle cars.. But the totally impractical nature of them to Europe is just to much. I know mustang has a euro friendly model now but a 5ltr engine with our fuel prices?! And it's still a ford so after 2-3 years bits will start falling off it. It's such a pity which is why I drive German... Pratical,Fast, looks awesome and mechanically/electronically bullet proof. But part of me still wants a uncomplicated big engined American beast...
Cars like the mustang, Camero, corvette, challenger, have all been built to beat the gas tax here in canada which means they have to get 25mpg or better
