What are the dimensions of the bin?

Also, try filling it up before you do all the work and check how much it bows.

maybe I'm naive but for 55 gallons why wouldn't you just get a used 55g tank?

$$$$$$$$$$$,and i have none.the bin is like 48x16x15,better dimensions than my glass 55, which is 48x12x22.
I dont feel good not reinforcing the window, the plastic bows to much,im thinking of making a plywood box and chain supports or something

oh and before you guys start flaming (if you cant afford it, dont do it) im on an allowance and i have everything to make this, even the filters and heater. i just dont have the money to buy a 150$ tank (im not in the U.S before you say 55's arent 150$)

A 20"x12" window in a 48"x16" wall? That seems kind of small to me.

IMO, you'll never rid the container of all of the bowing needed to keep it from pulling the seals loose. And with the amount of time and materials spent bracing the container, you might be better off building a plywood tank.

not sure where you live but i'm sure someone there has a used 55g for $50 or so.. heck, Petco has them new for $55 sometimes.. I rather you look for a used tank then to put 55g of water all over your floor.

My thoughts are that the rubbermaid is too flexible and it's not worth the risk.

If I had to do it, I suppose I would use 1/4 acrylic, drill holes all the way around through the container and the acrylic, silicone inbetween the acrylic and the container (acrylic on the inside), and then bolt it all together with stainless hardware.

Listen to rallysman, but add a frame like a porthole, the tub material is too thin by itself and will stretch and tear the holes. Also silicone won't adhere properly to either material so it is just being used as a gasket and this is the other reason to use the frame.

As for your location...you got alot of water around you? ;)

there are no tanks within 300 miles within where i live. No pfs nothing. All i have is a lake, like 30 ft long by 8 feet deep (it came with the land) my fish are from there, my 2 jds are wild caught. No Petco whatsoever,i think ill just not put a window in it, just put my wild caught oscars in it.

Well if you get the acrilic you can get a tank. Just make your own.
