Hi guys. I am going to start my 150 Gallon tank tommorow (hardiboard and drylok) and i was wondering if 1/8 inch glass (or whatever is in a 10 gallon) will be fine for a 10 inch viewing window?if not,i can do 3/8 laminated but i would like to keep the cost down. The window will be 20x12 and supported 1 inch all around it, so the viewing area is 18x10.

1/8" is pretty thin. I have 1/2" on my 320 and it is surrounded by angle iron and has two metal strips across the top for braces. My 200 also has 1/2" glass and is braced all around the top and has three glass strips across the top. In terms of safety, it's always better to err on the safe side, even if it costs a little more.

Even if the viewing window is only 10 inches tall?

Why would you build a nice sized tank like that and only have a 18X10 inch glass in it? How are you going to enjoy the tank like that?

I would say put a much larger, thicker window in there!!

Burt:)

short answer, hell no! if u can break it with one finger on a perfectly flat level surface like i do at work even without scoring the glass(not meaning to break it with a finger) then no way. although size of the viewing window is important end of the day 3mm or 1/8th inch is not thick enough. my advice is up the thickness and size of viewing window. you could easily do any sized window with 10mm. 1/8th is 3mm. other wise u may get away with 6mm for the size wondow you are suggesting. 1/8th in many glaziers opinion should be banned/ not made because its to weak there fore dasngerous. some company in aus refuse to stock it because of the compo payments needed to pay out to delivery dudes wo end up with nastycuts.

you arent getting the point his tank isnt even 90gallons. yours is 150. trust em get 10mm glass. it will be cheap and your garunteed the right thickness

I would use whatever thickness glass they use in any other 150 gallon aquarium. 12mm, or 1/2 inch plate glass is only $9.00 per square foot (from glasscages.com)

.5 inch Low Iron glass is only $15/square foot.
