Viquarim- 55 gal build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is a great build! I really enjoyed watching it come together. I have never seen that product before though. and pretty ingenious putting it on bricks!

Thanks! First saw the product a couple years ago, haven't seen too many since. Usually just see the faux waterfall filters. It was a fluke finding it so cheap. Great product, it says it is made for 20 to 55 gal tanks (recommended for 12" wide tanks). But I think it could be used in a variety of different setups.

I bought some hydrocotyle tripartita "Japan" for the 55 gal planted tank I just set up. (will make a thread about that soon) For those who don't know, it is a carpet plant that resembles 4-leaf clover, and is related to pennywort... It is supposed to work great as bog plant too. I may eventually use some of it after it explodes over my substrate... But I am stuck on terrestrial plants to put in with turtles

Great build on the tank.

I am trying to build a much larger tank with two of those units. How has the filtration been? Have you had any issues with fish being oxygen deprived? I currently have a similar setup with a 55 gallon tank and the viquarium. I spaced mine up, but not as high as yours. I do not have turtles, I keep 1 oregon newt and a wood frog. The water is about 11 gallons worth and I have 6 fish and it is full of live plants. It looks like you have at least 25 gallons of water in yours.

sorry for the late response! I must have over-looked this post somehow... I attest the filtration is not the greatest. I find that I have to flush the gravel bed about every two weeks and definitely stay up on 50% water changes every week. if i was to do I over again I would def use a bigger medium for the gravel bed to allow for more flow to the pump. however the system is still up and running. the turtles seem happy and healthy. I did have a major fish kill over the summer but that was the turtles fault, eh partly mine I suppose... it was a really hot week and I neglected the week water change because we were gone all weekend. the turtles decided the wanted a snack and tore apart most of the big comets the rest succumbed to the nasty water including my big pleco. that was a great smell to come back to!

I will post update pics later on tonight

I cant say the filtration is not good; it is not the greatest for turtles though... just due to the fact they are so dirty themselves. if i were to use the setup for a species that didnt produce so much waste it would be a lot better.
