Second bad experience. Heater set at 82 degrees but found my Albino Iridescent shark lying on the tank upside down while the rest of the fishes appear in no distress (Odoe, Dat, koi) When I fished it out, water was freezing. The ID was barely breathing, I tossed it into another tank (78-80 degrees)and after a few minutes it began moving, swimming upside down, in circles. Few more minutes it's slowing recovering swimming normally.
I started to medicate with ich medication plus salt -keeping fingers crossed. Found a spare heater to replace for now.

Few years back, a different visi therm over heated the tank and all my dats died.

I know marineland heaters had a recall few yrs back, anyone heard of one for Visi Therm?

Sure, why not.

I've never had Visi Therms malfunction. If you did not buy it new, you really don't know what it's been through.

I have had them break, or get too old - I replace them when they start getting questionable, not after crap happens.

I have a new 300 watt Visi Therm in my emergency equipment box. Got good reviews on pet mountain and was a cheap back up. I have never had to pull it out to use yet so I dont know how reliable they are. If I had to pull it out the box it would give me time to shop for a new heater and then go back in my emergency kit.

Not necessarily.

Koi are normally out in ponds during the summer - in warm water...

In heated tanks, they simply have higher metabolisms, eat more, grow faster, and poop a lot more. As in, living the high life. :)

Most hobbyists I know trust Eheim. I've had two over the last two years and I don't think there's been any problem yet.

I always buy new heaters so that isn't an issue. I'll try the eheim heaters.
As for the Koi, it's not an issue, they eat more, do more water changes/filter changes. Raised them from 3" to current 20". Thanks for concern though

I had a visi-therm heater for 7yrs and no problem. Sold the tank with it. Had a stealth and that is a piece of junk! Temp dropped down to 62 and replaced it with a visi-therm, now my temp stays steady at 84. Been going good for 3 months now.
