Hey guys, i have a bit of a problem. about 3 days ago i bought a 12 inch volition lion fish for my birthday and he looks really really healthy, but hes not eating...
I got him at animals and things up here in jersey and the staff there said he would eat frozen krill like nothing...so i gave frozen krill a go, and he didnt even look at it...ive done a 50% w/c and water parameters are all good. Can anybody help on what to feed him or is he sick...?

-Thanks-

He's still getting used to the move he should come around but every Lion I have had will starve after trying everything because they just wont eat at least for me.

lol, not to be the bearer of bad news, but mine died as well from not eating. The pet shop just asked my parameters until one didn't match and said that was the cause...which i think is bs (said that my pH of 8 did it when it should be 8.4 lol). They are touchy fish, keep trying to feed him, possibly try some live food if it is available.

i had one of my lions (fuzzy dwarf) die from self enduced starvation. i have another now and it eats like a pig. even on the day i put it in the tank. i have what i think is a small (like 2") volitan, it didnt eat for a few days... it eats now. so it may just need to settle in. its a big fish. it will be set for a good while before it needs to eat. especially if it filled its boots in the LFS. give it a few more days before you should worry. my first FD lion didnt really eat properly for 2 months... they are tough fish, and are built to handle famine.

i think predators can be really iffy in aquaria. they either feed or they dont. so i would try to replicate its natural environment as much as possible, down to its desired prey if possible. it will be expensive to do, but cheaper than a new lionfish. go and get some cheap damselfish, or shrimp/prawns from your lfs. if you have a spare tank. gut load them with algae, or flake so your lion gets as much nutrition from them as possible.

when you say the LFS said it ate frozen foods, did you actually see it eat? my first Fuzzy Dwarf was picky in the LFS, and that died. my new one was going nuts chasing the brine round the tank. i think they have to have really healthy appetites to be successfuly aclimatized to life in the home aquarium. there may be a point where they decide enough is enough, and then refuse food indefinately. moving fish will obviously stress them out. but not enough to hit 'the wall'...

I used brine shrimp and I kept a separate QT tank of damsels when mine would stop eating. Then he would start again and take silver sides and krill from the tongs. I would go through this every few months till he passed.

ph - 8.2
Temp - 78°
Nitrates - Really close to 0

All ive tried are the frozen krill that the store told me they feed him.
its day 4 now and no sights of feeding...
should i try live shrimp or somthing.
thanks

Live brine is good to get them to eat but not a good source of nutrition. It is like fish ice cream. Tastes good but not a lot of nutrition. if he will eat live brine try feeding that and frozen cubes like the mysis brine mix soaked in nutrients for better nutrition.

try to get some live Palaemontes Vulgaris to offer and while they are introduced add some krill in the mix.
