would this not only be bad if something breaks/fails then as no current is measured with or without the probe?

So with the probe installed you are now measuring voltage drop on a complete circuit. No resistance in the completed circuit means no voltage diferential. Your only measuring potential cause the circuit isn't completed till the probes dropped in. Is this correct?
