Not familiar with these. Do they run all the time or do you just “polish the tank” then take it off?

You can run them either way from what I have gathered. If you run them daily you have to lube them every media change and that will most likely be every 48 hours. Not a big deal. Most people run them as a polisher. I run mine full time for now.

be careful running full time as the motor was not designed for continuous use. you may find the life of your unit drops off drastically.

mine lasted 15 years with sporadic use

near the end of its life it ran hotter than normal, the seals went and it leaked etc.

but for the number of years I had it, you can't complain.

May have to look into these. For the most part my tanks are quite clear, and have tests clear every time.

yeah mine are always clear and test clear this is kind of a toy. Works great and brings water to the next level imo...

you will find that for most people, you will hardly use the filter because your tanks are always clear.

I bought mine initially only because I had a stubborn green water problems that it cleared up overnight, but after that I only used the filter periodically, as my tanks were always clear anyway..
exactly. I cant see myself using it more than once a week after this initial fun :) Unless I get a disease outbreak or some other problem in which case it will be quite handy to have :headbang2

will the XL be effective on a 150 gal? for those of you who have used them for algae blooms how long does the water stay clear before you have to polish it again?

Absolutely should be effective on a 150 gallon. As far as algae blooms that depends on a ton of factors if your dealing with a green water issue that is constant a UV sterilizer might be a better solution.

Dose any one acutualy oil there's like it says to on the motor every 3 months?
