What is the Best Center Piece Fish Option for my 55 Gallon Long?

I voted for the Jewels because of the adult size. They stay the smallest so the 55 would offer them more room than a fish twice it's size. The first three have the potential to get to 6in or more so the tightness of the 55 would really show it's cramped quarters vs a fish that is only 3in.

You said as a center piece, what are the other fish you’re planning on keeping?

Do jewels if you want color, but a convict if you want a hardy, dependable, interactive fish. Jewels are also that way, but it’s hard to really beat a convict for the best smaller cichlid.

I going to assume the answer is no considering the general rule about mixing SA cichlids with African cichlids, but I'm going to ask anyway. Can a convict and a Jewel live together in the same tank?

That’s dependent on tank size. I don’t think it’s impossible in a 55, but it could easily go south at any day. Both have the potential to get really mean and may see the other as a competitor without enough territory.

Possibly one of the most common mixes when it comes to people venturing into cichlids, as Deadeye says it does have the potential to go wrong to alleviate this avoid having pairs. Both are more waspish than truly aggressive in that size aquarium without spawning behaviour. Keep an eye on them but it is possible if you are ok with having unnatural tankmates.
