W.C. With Tap water?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
would that reverse the effect of a salt -driven water softener?

I have no idea, was looking thru Dr f&s and saw it on sale, but only 125 gals that's weak! Lhs have good inline chlorine reducing units for cheap.

Lol @ enforced, I remember that chat ;)

I have a good trace amount of ammonia as well in my tap water.... you can always buy a carbon block filter to reduce the ammonia.... I do water change str8 from tap to carbon filter to tank..and everything is all good.....

I have tested several things to make sure it was not the testing kit (bought a new one, tested bottled water, tank water etc.) We just have a lot of chlorine in our tap water...

Its not the chlorine I'd be worried about (easy enough to deal to using Prime) but the ammonia. I like JK47's suggestion of using a cycled sponge filter in a barrel to convert the Ammonia into Nitrate before adding it to the tank, though if your water is high in chlorine you may want to remove the sponge filter whole filling the barrel until you've treated it with dechlorinater.

The APT test kits shows ammonia do chlorine and other minerals... There is not actual ammonia it's just chlorine and other hard minerals...

Oops sorry if I made this unclear my tank does not have any ammonia in it my tap water does.. I have 1 fish in it pbass (ocellaris) When I use prime to declorinated my tap water it still tests high in ammonia.

Your test WILL indicate positive for ammonia when using prime. It binds with the free ammonia to form ammonium something or other that will not harm the fish. Then your bio filter can do its stuff. Is your tap water show ammonia before using a dechlorinator? If so, you need to be speaking with your water supplier.

Can you answer Rodgers question? Are you testing the tap water directly from the tap, or after treating with Prime?

Taken from the FAQ section of Seachem's website:

Q:I tested my tap water after using Prime and came up with an ammonia reading. Is this because of Prime? Could you explain how this works in removing chloramine?

A: Prime works by removing chlorine from the water and then binds with ammonia until it can be consumed by your biological filtration (chloramine minus chlorine = ammonia). The bond is not reversible and ammonia is still available for your bacteria to consume. Prime will not halt your cycling process.
I am going to assume that you were using a liquid based reagent test kit (Nessler based, silica). Any type of reducing agent or ammonia binder (dechlorinators, etc) will give you a false positive. You can avoid this by using our Multitest Ammonia kit (not affected by reducing agents) or you can wait to test, Prime dissipates from your system within 24 hours.

Okay thanks for the help!! I am going to get a R.O. System to get pure water.. I have a small 20 G tank that I am going to experiment with (adding the declorinated tap water and seeing how fast the bacteria breaks it down)
