also, couldnt I drill into a side - 2" below the waterline? this way, if the pump was having issues, the worst that would happen is the waterline would drop and the sump would fill up. passed the "dry" media.

Keep in mind that the height of the hole drilled is where the water level will be.

It's risky drilling glass if you're guessing about it being tempered. You'll find out fast if it is.
