I tried to set up my wet/dry sump today, but I think I must have done something wrong. When the pump is turned on, and water starts flowing through the skimmer into the drilled overflow bit in the corner, there is a ton of turbulence, and lots of bubbles. The bubbles get sucked into the pipe to the sump, and it all makes a ton of noise.

I am also having a problem with the pump :(
It makes a rattling sound, and I tried to open it up to look at the impeller. I can't get it open though. It is a quiet1 3000, and it came with the whole tank setup that I bought. Does anyone know how to open the stupid thing?

thanks

Supposedly it has "Exclusive design allows for proper rotation and easy maintenance of removable impeller."

but The impeller cover won't come off. :irked:

one more thing: is a fluval 404 enough filtration for the 75, temporarily, while I sort out the sump issue? I was hoping to transfer my green terror tomorrow.

fellow MFK'ers, where are you when I need you?

yes fulu 404 use it :) sump not sure on what went wrong i hope you get some help :)

The pump will rattle if there isn't enough water in the sump. When it is in operation, make sure that the pump is covered. If not, just add water.

my pump was making a lot of noise as well when I didn't have enough water in the sump. The water was also returning into the tank with a lot of turbulence when that happened. When I added water into the sump the pump noise reduced and the water started coming into the tank in a more even flow. I have a valve coming off the pump which I can use to reduce the speed at which the water returns into the tank. That allows me to control the level of water in the sump.

my quiet one 3000 rattled terribly when i had the 5/8 hose connected to it, running 1" off the pump should fix it. also sometimes air gets trapped in the impeller part, unplugging for a couple seconds and then plugging it back in works for me.

What about all the turbulence when water flows from the tank into the overflow? Thats where most of the noise is coming from, because the bubbles go through the pipe that carries water to the sump. The pump works fine, and the whole wet/dry system is operating, and probably able to serve its intended purpose, except it is make a piss load of noise so I can't use it.

I have some pictures:
here water flows into the overflow thing, and its like a little waterfall, so there are a ton of bubbles

there are all the bubbles in the water. The pipe on the right is returning water from the sump, the pipe with the sponge on it takes water down into the sump, carrying all the bubbles with it

all the bubbles shoot out from this pipe

the pump operates fine, except its making a continuous clicking noise, like the impeller is tapping something

It seems I have found a solution. I'm going to make a Durso Standpipe thing, so the water doesn't have to fall so far into the overflow chamber. No thanks to you guys...
