So I finally gave in and placed an order for a wet dry filter. It is a ProClear Premier 125 model with prefilter and a CA 2200 return pump (flow rate of 450gph). This filter is intended for a 125 gallon tank and has a sump of about 8.5 gallons.

Last night, sometime after ordering it, I got cold feet -- will this be powerful enough for a 125 gallon tank? I don't mind running a Fluval 404 alongside with it for added mechanical filtration but would likle to ditch the HOBs (currently 3 AC110). Should I have opted for a larger sump? A more powerful pump? Anything else?

If you find it's not enough you can always get another one, no law against running 2 sumps on the one tank. (plus redundancy ect)

Well it's definitely not overkill by itself. I'll -almost- do 4x per hour turnover.
