I recently came across the Wakin goldfsh, it looks sort of like a koi to me. Does anyone know the difference? How big do they actually get compared to koi? Koi are so beautiful, I wish it was possible to keep one in an indoor aquarium, but I've heard from many that they get too large. Does anyone have experience with keeping and Wakin Goldfish indoors? There doesn't seem to be a ton of information available about them, and even less resources to help you locate one.

Wakin goldfish is a rare strain of goldfish. They are not koi carp. Wakin is a double tailed type...looks like a cross between a fantail and a common goldfish. They do well in ponds but stays smaller than koi carp. You should able to house wakin goldfish indoors just like other goldfish.

Not familiar with Wakins
Though koi are beautiful as seen from the surface, how they were bred to be seen.
Whether or not as seen from the side, that kind of beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. To me from the side they just look like designer/colorful carp.

I keep goldfish and koi in outside ponds in summer, but in the winter keep them indoors in the basement in a 500 gal kiddy pool.

When small, growing them out, I had them in a tank inside in winter, and they did OK.

I keep both in my ponds year round...
Ive grown out 2" wakin to about 6" then they go Into my ponds. Biggedt guy i have is shy of 9". I like them because they compete with my koi for food, not like ryukin or orandas.

Wakin are a very ancient variety of goldfish and are the progenitors of the fantail. They grow to reach just under 9". I have 4 yellow wakin and 21 yellow wakin fry. Despite them having a bifurcated tail they are very adept swimmers and can hold their own against single tailed varieties.
