I'm guessing you mean customers that shop "for fish" at wal-mart, and not wal-mart customers in general.

meant to say average and yes only fish custmomers... was like 30 seconds from changing it lol.

i don't have a tank list. i wasn't implying anything of the sort clearly, because as the starter of this thread clearly stated, they have fish that get 24"+ for $5.95. if they are too "poor"(and i quote) to pay 6 bucks for a fish how would one expect them to be able to pay for food throughout the fish's life.
and the general wal-mart customer has little basic knowledge of anything aquatic if any. so they would not have the experience to maintain a fish like a clown knife or any for that matter.

Say what you will about WalMart. But, in my opinion, they're not that different than your local PetSmart except with less of a selection. One good thing I can say about WalMart is they got some Salvinis in that I've been hunting for forever.

Oh yeah, I have giant tanks and shop at WalMart. Don't assume everyone who shops there has a 20g with two Oscars. Also in WalMart's defense, they do have tags that list the sizes of the fishes full grown. If someone buys the fish and aren't prepared properly, is that WalMart's fault?

It seems like some of you guys won't be happy until there's some sort of application process with "proof of life" of a big tank before people are allowed to buy certain fishes. That's not America. To quote the honorable Beaufort T. Justice, "That's just pure and simple communism.".

I'm not sure because I cant read Jorys mind, but I am pretty sure he was not implying all Wal-Mart customers are retards or have low IQ, or that we MFKers who swing by the local Wal-Mart to look at the current stock of fish they are torturing and killing are a bunch of 20 gal dip sh*t*, I think he was sayin that on the whole most Wal-Mart customers are buying fish there because they cheap and the purchaser is just impulse buying a cute or neat looking fish without reading the disclaimer tag on size.

I never realized there were so many people on this site that went thread hunting trying to find a reason to slam people for saying things like Jory did, since this is all written word and there is no voice inflection nor body language expression to coincide with a posters words, you need to read between the lines a little. None of his posts said Wal-Mart customers are all dumb A**'s and they cant rub 2 nickles together to make a dime, he said they are just uneducated on the whole about fish selection and care for the long term.

No offense was meant. I just see a lot of threads putting down WalMart and PetSmart. In my opinion, these two retailers, more than any other, are responsible for bringing more people into the hobby we all share.

And regardless of everything else I posted above, the WalMarts I've been in all have tags that clearly state how big these fishes get. If someone buys a fish that gets two feet long and have a 10g or 20g tank, who is at fault? The retailer? I don't think so. Last time I checked, all the non-chain fish stores in my area sell the same fishes. There are no background checks.

Again, no offense is meant to anyone. This is just my opinion. I just get tired of seeing a "WalMart/PetSmart sucks" thread every other day. It gets ponderous.

I mean really, if someone deserves blame, wouldn't it be the breeders/distibutors who make these large fishes available for purchase? I don't ever recall seeing a thread about how breeders/distributors suck. Surely they should know that only a tiny percentage of those in this hobby have tanks big enough to keep big fishes properly, right? (just like everyone thinks WalMart/PetSmart should)

Of course, I'm being a little sarcastic. But it's the exact same point. Again, no offense meant at all.:)

what customers go into wal-mart with a sufficient sized tank for clown knives in the first place?

its irresponsible for any store to sell fish that couldn't live for life in a tank they sell and have in stock.

wal-mart doesn't carry anything bigger than a 55, they shouldn't carry clown knives. probably shouldn't even carry oscars (not for $15 at 3", anyway. ripoff).

TF-

What Jory meant was that us as members on this site, MFK'ers...when we go into Wal-Mart what do we think of? The posts we see on our site about people buying these pacu, oscars, ck's in this case and they do put them into 10, 20 and 29 gallon tanks. Now with that being said you are right that the majority of chain stores are what makes people buy other animals they know little to nothing about, impulse buys, buys that we in this hobby condone, because the end result is usually not good. This is all he meant by his post and you have a very good point also.:)
