To add.. Chances of getting an educated and good knowledgeble employee at a bad LFS are better than the odds of getting one at walmart.

There are some.. But still .

What do you think?

Disagree. Walwart is constantly hiring people, which increases its chances of getting some employees that actually know something about fish. LFS are normally really picky about who they hire, and are seldom hiring. So normally who they currently have hired is who you are stuck with. Ironically, a knowledge of the animals at the LFS is not a requirement to work there it seems.

Point is that it is pointless to focus on Walmart when there are many more places that are just as bad.

much as I hate to admit..thats right. I agree with everyone and walmart but I was just at petco yesterday and saw about 25% of the fish dead. I have been to some of my favorite lfs and one of my top ones has a huge JD in a 60g split in half. Also... at one last week I saw a RTC in a 55 and the RTC was bout 10-12 inches. Its something that you can try to do something about but it wont do too much. I just sadly have to turn my head.

Agreed ;) But really I have watched hundreds of lame Walmart employees vs.. Lfs employees.. But maybe that is just here.. No one here goes to walmart to work.. especially if they know anything about animals... Very interesting..

I've wanted to apply to Walmart just to work in the pet section part time to try and turn things around!!! Didn't think it would work out so well though trying to sell my fish in their tanks . . .

That is where you also decided that it was pointless too right?? Cannot help... Cannot change... Not gonna matter anyway :D

you know here the wall marts do a horrible job of keeping the fish healthy, but petsmart does a great job. petsmart actually does as good as the lfs around here. the petco is about the same as the lfs. it's nice and clean and all the fish are healthy. they don't have any dead fish floating around or anything.

the one near me keeps the water clean and the tanks clean. the better post would be walmart closing down good local fish stores. 5 good local fish stores by me were closed for that reason

Let's not forget this one, folks.:)

People there are working to improve the information provided by Petco and Petsmart.
sorry i havent figured out how to put your name in there....

anyway this is a good post and forum lupin. always on top of things.
yeah i work at petsmart and i have seen all the BAD tags and i ask people why and they say its so we can actually fish to the people around here...

i think the problem with most corporate pet stores is that they are too eager to make bank and not care (despite the many threads about them caring tooo much) i think they should just make a policy in like EVERY pet department that they should know the product they're selling even if it means going home and researching for the min wage job they're getting.... cuz like its been said before... walmart isnt the only problem with fish its just a piece of the chain of fish abuse or whatever like that. i think just about everyon stands room for improvement (except those little like pro/advanced fish stores cuz they are just AWESOME!!!:headbang2) and really there's not muchh we can do to all stores in the modern world.... unless we all like wrote letters to the corporate offices of every major pet vendor requesting that they give/receive adequate training sufficient in properly selling and keeping the pets they provide at least and even for other popular animals too.... its just a start though

Who told you this? I didn't. Miles didn't.

I know I told you its cuz no one at corporate knows anything about anything.

I think we need someone like boss man at corporate and it would get better :D

Anyway, there are lots of places that sell fish that shouldn't like the Ben Franklin arts and crafts store in my town that sells not only bettas, but cories, balas, larger catfish and many others that it shouldn't. Even if walmart stops others will start. . . just my opinion.
