Walk me through your water change.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a python.. and it sits unused .. because our faucets aren't compatable.. so 5 gallon buckets are my best friend. do 25-50% WC's 2x a week on my tanks 'cept my planted which gets a 50% 1x a week ( also when I do a big fert dose) .. I simply syphon/suck up poop filling how ever many buckets I need ( depending on tank) and then re-fill w/ buckets.. ones getting dumped into the tank while another is filling in the tub... I use aquasafe water conditioner, we have very high levels of iron and other heavy metals in our water... and I've had great results useing it.

wow.. is this in a tank?

It is a 220g glass, 75g glass, and a 300g indoor pond all on a central sump.

if there are threads anywhere on your fixtures it is definately Python compatable....I thought the same....i bought and returned a python a year ago cause it would not fit. i called the company and the owner returned my call. He offered to send me the universal adapter which does not thread and work on ANYTHING but not as well as a threaded connect.....I wound up picking up an adapter for the adapter for .89 at a hardware store....NOT HOME DEPOT OR LOWES. It works perfectly now!

My routine is a bit different.
A garden hose runs to the bathtub for draining.
PVC fittings hook it to the tank and is cut to the amount of water I want removed.

I added an unglued, 90 deg. street ell to the pipe so I can piviot it for a bit less/more water out.
I hook the hose up to the sink in the same bathroom for filling. Faucet adapter from HD/Lowes.
FaucetAdpt.jpg

I add the Prime from a dosing syringe which gives me an accurate, easy way to get it into the tank.
I have to do this every 3 days or my nitrate level get out of hand.
The price you pay for overstocking.
I use a little battery powered vac for getting the poop out.
Works pretty good for only $15.

I had to add a bit of CPVC to the pick up tube because it was too short for my tank.
I used to use this
Vac2.jpg

It really did a great job of cleaning the tank with not that much hassle.
When I tried the battery vac I stopped using my vac-o-saurus.
Right around 70% WC works best for me.
I put no buffers or anything else into the water going into the tank.
I don`t even mess with the temperature.
Never had any issues doing it this way.

i think one of these vacs might be handy beside my python. i see the kleen sweep runs with the air pump. does it create enough vacuum to pull up all the waste? I always figured it would be a POS does it work on monster poop?

I modified a Gravel Vac onto an 18' piece of old Garden hose. I throw the hose out the window and use that to gravel vac. Then I pull the hose back in and hook it to the faucet that I plumbed in under the bathroom sink to refill. Before filling I add Prime. And Filters are turned off for the whole process. Takes about 15-20 Minutes.

However I am not sure how this is going to work with the new tank and filter.

sounds like a 50% or more WC with a dose of prime is the way to go.. the only thing im worried about now is if the cold tap water will shock my one tropical fish. i have a 6-8 in. clown loach i picked up to clean out some snails. that has for the most part happened so now i need to find the clown loach a home so i dont have to worry about cold water changes.
