my new acquired reti has been gliding up and down the wall for a while now. i've read this is normal and that he may be simply enjoying himself but i just wanted to be sure. he just bobs up and down the wall for a minute or so, then rests and does it all over again. i have bubbles on one end of the tank and he has been doing the same thing in the bubbles as well. what do you think?

he also has ignored the little bit of bloodworms/brine shrimp i have put in there for him. going to see how he does tomorrow morning.

thanks in advance!

thats good to hear. he just came into the home today and is in my quarantine tank. he has been nibbling on the food i put in there, just doesn't lunge at it like most fish do.. perhaps it's the stress from traveling.

do stingrays feed with the lights out?

also, a thing of concern is parasites. i've seen 2 worms in the tank so far that have come with the fish. they are tiny, about 3/4 of a centimeter in length and barely as wide as a hair. it wiggles around pretty rapidly not really going anywhere except where the current takes it. i've scooped them out with a net but am going to get the next one with a turkey baster so i can place him in a vial and examine under a microscope. anyone had experience with such worms? probably not a good thing

the ray is looking healthy though

They are quite normal and come from bad water at the LFS you got the ray, They can killed off with aquarium salt but need a very high amount. Also your ray is acting normal and is just looking for food and playing around.

Doing water changes will get rid of those worms....clean water..then clean water some more.

He might eat better when lights are dimmed .. healthy stingrays rarely refuse food.

Try night crawlers chopped up.

he eventually ate all the food that was put into the tank which i'm happy about, i'll try diffusing the light a little bit as it may be too intense for the little guy.

water changes are going to be done regularly, what would you recommend? i'm thinking 25% every other day.. i'll keep an eye out for those worms. anybody know what they are named? nematodes?

well its in quarantine right now.. 55g waiting to go into my 225g. ray is about 4" width. there are no other tankmates in the quarantine tank. in the 225g there are 8 juvi discus, ~3"

it will stay in the 55g for another 2-3weeks at least

:welcome: to MFK. Before you bought the ray did it eat before you took it home? If not, retics at the size can be very picky eaters. Just give some time to settle in and then try feeding again.

It's my theory that rays "climb" up walls because they do not encounter vertical walls in their natural habitat... during 100 million years or so of evolution, they have never encountered obstacles that they couldn't swim over, around or under, so when the come to a wall in a tank, they react naturally by trying to swim over or around it... I don't think we can say that rays "play"... that's a little anthropomorphic...
