Medway Me.
In wall mart they have shop light bulbs labled 'Plant and aquarium' They are about half the price of the bulbs I buy from dr. foster/smith. Are thease bulbs any good?

The plant and aquarium ones are no good. they have a dull reddish/yellowish color and the "Plant & Aquarium" doesn't mean "Aquarium Plants".
Walmart does have GE "Fresh & Saltwater" bulbs that are stocked by the pet supplies though. Those lights are gorgeous. they're in the 9000k range and look similar (i think they look better) than the AGA bulbs. these bulbs like i said are stocked by the pet supplies, not by the rest of the bulbs. see if you can find them.

I got some fluorescent ones for my 10 gallon. They were like 5$ and are very good so far.

I bought a couple of them (T12) and put them in a simple shop light fixture. Not the highest dollar plant light, but works as a temporary unit. Can't complain. Champagne taste on a beer buget.LOL

If you using them to grow plants look for one with a K rating as close to 6700K as possible. I found a ton of 6500K screw in bulbs for a buck a piece. My buddy uses them for his planted shrimp tanks and the results are amazing. If you do find cheap 6700k lamps let us know.

I use Sunbeam screw in flourescent bulbs in my 10 gallon incandescent hood. The look they give the water is as if there was sunlight instead of a lightbulb. I have yet to notice any excess algae, so I don't feel that it will cause any if your tank lights are on only 8-12 hours a day.

I'm using the plant/aquarium ones from Lowes and at $6 each they work fine. Nice color balance. I have a few plants too and they look great.
Like those blue insect lights the color does wash after 8 months so I just go out and get new ones.

I just couldnt see spending $18 a bulb at the LFS.

TRy the Phillips Daylight Deluxe bulbs from the home improvement places.... 40 watts and 6500K t12's. I've been very happy with them for fish only tanks. Oh sorry...about 8 or 9 bucks a pair. for 48" and available in other sizes as well
