Wallago Attu- the experience

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yea i got him from Scott down at OSA. For those of you who havent worked with Scott, it was a great pleasure. After i sent him the payment we set up a good day to ship so i would be home when the wallago arrived. I will be moving him tomorrow or tuesday. I put one of his tank mates in today, nice 9 1/2" albino channel catfish. It has felt like christmas around my house the last few days haha. Here's a few of the tank and a tank mate. I'll have more pictures tomorow.

So this weekend has proven eventful. i moved all the cats to the tank shown above. The wallago has claimed the center of the tank as his, pushing both tigers and the channel to the outer edges. Here are the much awaited pictures of my new beauty!

A note on feeding:
At this size, in a tank as large as mine. he does have some issues hunting. Mostly because there is to much space for the goldies to escape. So to anyone whose a bit screamish you may want to stop here. I cut the tails off atleast one goldie at each feeeding time. Right now he's about 8-9" and one goldie seems to fill him up for 4-6 hours. So with that said i assume in time he will be able to hunt and catch feeders on his own. But until then cut the tails. Treat these fish very much like gars, they are very capable hunters as adults, but as young, in a tank that may be a little to large for them, a little help is required. Questions so far?

Also, mine, possibly all are very net shy. Mine jumped 4 times nearly 3 feet each jump out of the tank. so remeber if you have one a lid is a must!

I love that grin that they have, they look soo devious

Haha you have no idea. Before i moved to raising this fish the catfish i was used to would do a quick scan, find food, and swallow. Tofu, which is what he has been named, is a true hunter. stalkign his prey and waiting for the right moment to strike. so far i have yet to see the moment of kill. BUT with time i'm sure i will see him take down a few feeders. he is truely the king of my tank, perchign high attop a tower of rotalla nearly 2' tall and looking down on the bottom.

I finally got to watch him attck and successfully consume a feeder. It was over in the blink of an eye and i almost missed it had i not see the feeder ball scatter across the tank as he charged. I'm looking for an underwater camera to watch him so i can show you guys how he feeds as a juvi. Also, anyoen in maine that has a pair or two of breeding convicts that woudl be interested in either selling me young or a pair, contact me. Would liek to start varying his diet a bit more from the store bought.
