Taxonomically, micropogon has been split off from leerii relatively recently and most fish that were labeled leerii, IIRC, experts said were in fact micropogon.

Hence, I think for our intents and purposes, we can lump the two together.

IME, the leerii / micropogon are shy and not aggressive fish with respect to territory or hierarchy but I've never had one much over 2'.

A arapaimag tells a different story about his 5' fish. These rule his 52,000 gal tank and have killed a plethora of tank mates not to feed on them but for a different reason.

Sorry for the question - What's the difference between leeri and micropogon?
Was wondering the same as they both get huge, mouth shape looks similar as well as body mass ratio. Nothing like the difference between attu and leeri for sure

Yea, I forgot, Michael also said that his female is bigger and is the alpha of the tank and that the slightly shorter and more slender male is a beta and often bears marks of the female displeasure with him.

I have never had more than one at a time, so can't say anything firsthand for the smaller fish.

I wonder if Goldie Kingrancher2011 Kingrancher2011 , who was willing to give one of his family jewels for a Wallago, found one.

So finally managed to get a pair of these at small size. Any info on aggression, temp, diet would be greatly appreciated. I have a general idea but would love to hear some first hand experience. One thing I noticed they went from a dark mottled color to sold black almost. I will get more photos once they come out a little more.

If they are anything like my first one, they won't come out for years. My first one lived in a half of a clay pot and I've never seen it, until I rehomed it into an unfurnished enclosure. I had to shove his food in the pot and only guess if it ate or not.

I came home and feed the tank with the wallago cats. I built some slate caves for both in each corner of the 140 and they have each taken to a side. I feed the orinos cut fish and put a piece near each cave. Both ate and the larger one even took piece from my hand almost. I then offered krill pieces to both and then carnivore pellet. All eaten so they must have settled in and became hungry. So far I really like them.

Nice pick ups! Wallagos are my favourite cats.

Had these for a week or 2 now. Can honestly say they are a great addition. They come out more openly now and consume almost anything I give them. No aggression noticed and I’ve had there temp at 84. So far so good.
