Wanna make dry land for snapper, how to go about?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
looks like i need to start building my red ear and painted turtles new tank.:nilly:

as to the original poster, i would suggest seing if your turtle enjoys basking before you go to all of that trouble. might i suggest a piece of Styrofoam and a makeshift ramp? at least see if hes interested you know. mine loves it but i have heard many do not.

snappers mostly come out of the water in captivity when there water source is to deep for them to comfortably tank breaths off the bottom you should lower your water level a inch or two then he'll stay in the water and act more "normal"

If you put a snapping turtle in a cage that it must swim up and down the water column just to breathe it will then stay out of the water all the time that or drown in the "fish tank" you setup there not good swimmers there made to lay on the bottom and left there nose just a bit to breath . the tank setups your looking at only work for high energy turtles that are great swimmers like the maps, painted and res .

my snapper can sit on the bottom with all four feet and still have his head out of the water. it not too deep. my snapper also sits up on his butt like a dog and smacks the glass to beg for a fish.he also enjoys having the back of his head rubbed and has never tried to bite me. he is far from "normal" and i like that. all turtles are different just like people. that is why i suggested that he try letting the turtle bask to see if he likes it at all before he goes to all that trouble. some snappers to bask. and they all need uvb rays. which they get from the sun, not from the bottom of a pond.

there is a link. check it out. lots of info. but here is a quote from that page

"The necessity of a basking light in making a common snapping turtles enclosure is usually ignored. Most people believe that snappers don't bask and as a rule, leave water only to lay eggs. As a result of these believes, the keepers don't supply them with a basking light. From my experience though, I would recommend the purchase of a full spectrum basking spot light, especially for juvenile snappers. All of my baby snapping turtles basked now and then, and some of them, taking a nap on a piece of driftwood under the hot rays of the spot light ( espesially in the winter ) became a daily routine. "

as i sit here and look over at my snapping turtle tank, i wonder what he is doing laying asleep under his heat lamp.

i do agree, however, that in case he doesnt want to bask not to build an obvious red ear slider tank (as its labeled tank for red ear slider) that is too much water for a snapper. but he is looking more at the concept. getting ideas. i doubt very much if hes going to fill that 35 gallon tank up to the brim and throw his turtle in it. he just needed to get a little motivation and to get those wheels turning.

Exactly, the water level wont change. Just trying to get the wheels moving

Point made is the RES tanks are full to the top. If I were to make such a contraption, my water level wouldnt rise.
