Want a Big Cichlid for a 55 planted.

hmmm. maybe I will give discus another shot. IME I've always ended up killing them off :\

LBathory, could you please specify what species exactly are the tetras, gouramis and plecos? The next replies will be pretty much sraightforward after that. I might warn you that unless you are feeding your yoyo loaches enough vegetables in their diet, they will punch holes on all your plants that have soft foliage.

The tetras I plan on are cardinals, black phantoms, red phantoms, and tiger barbs ( I know, not a tetra)

I didn't know that about the loaches, what would you recomend I feed them as far as vegitation is concerned? I already will be putting zuchini in the tank due to the plecos, will that be enough?

oh, and the goramis and plecos are pearl goramis (probably 3) and a leopard frog pleco as well as a galaxy pleco and maybe a king tiger.

Ditch the tiger barbs off your list. They can damage your plants as much as your other fish. Note your male phantom tetras have long dorsal fins. You don't want their fins trimmed.

As for loaches, try the kuhlis, sidthimunkis, kubotais or zebras. They work well in planted tanks. As for cichlids, apistos or rams work best. Zucchini alone is not enough. Try other veggies such as peas, squash, cucumber, etc.

maybe I'll add some rams then:) Are you sure about the tigers? I know they have a bad rep but I saw a very similar setup with a few tigers and the other fish (including phantom tetras) and plants seemed okay..
