Looking to buy a new toy, hopefully sometime in the near future. Looking to build a pretty serious off road rig, although I probably won't be doing hardcore rock crawling and bashing it against boulders.
I think right now I'm between a 97-06 Jeep Wrangler TJ or a 90-97 FJ80 Toyota Land Cruiser. Haven't really looked at other options since I want a vehicle that has solid axles up front and everything is IFS these days.
Either way, I'd like to run a 4-6" lift with 37" tires, full armor, racks, winch, etc. Maybe even make it into an expedition-type rig. Here's my comparison list:
Land Cruiser
- Older, so it would have a ton of miles, harder to find one in good shape
- Parts are harder to find and more expensive, limited suspension options
- Built like a tank, more room to carry stuff
- It's a TOYOTA, and the 80-series Land Cruisers are known for being bullet-proof
- Full time 4WD
- Somewhat limited articulation up front when compared to a Jeep
Jeep
- Newer, less miles, better condition. More expensive up front
- Huge aftermarket, cheaper parts, and tons of suspension options
- Tiny back seats, virtually no room to carry anything for longer trips
- Questionable reputation and reliability
- Shorter wheelbase can cause for some scary situation on steep uphill/downhill climbs
- Crazy front/rear articulation
And now some cool pics:
FJ80

TJ:

I know it's not a TJ, but it's just too damn cool!
