Well I looked on the stickies and most of them say they require a tank larger than mine so that's why I was questioning. And okay so I could go for 2 females and 1 male hystrix? But. Have read they are a harder species to keep?

This is true, although buying cb rays makes a world of difference. Cb rays are parasite free as well as they are more willing to eat prepared foods. They are the smallest rays you can buy and I think that you will be fine if you buy a trio if cb hystrix as long as you make sure your filtration system can handle the huge bio load that comes with rays.
