Want to change up my substrate.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use a fine gravel that I collected from a local river.

I use toepedo beach sand. It's the best even though it costs a little.

I use pool filter sand also. It's heavy enough that the python vacuum doesn't suck it all out when you're cleaning it. The fish love it and it's easy to keep clean. As far as removing the play sand, the dustpan sounds like a good idea. Good luck!

I use Unipac Tana sand as suggested by some people when i set up my tank. It's great stuff and comes off the rays easily and does not float. I used BD aquarium sand in an older tank but this stuck to the rays and never came off very well. Unipac is very good stuff, i am very pleased with it.

pool filter sand buddy, Estes sand they speak of.... was impossible to find, seems to be a USA product or something, unless its called by a different name in Canada, but i called all over Regina and Saskatoon with no luck, but pool filter sand is very cheap and way heavier

You can get estes in canada.

I would say you could prob use just about any small gravel as long as there isnt any sharp stuff. I use caribsea torpedo beach. You can always just go to caribsea.com and see all the different options and then try to find something in your area.

Imo the torpedo beach is a perfect size. Heavy enough to stay on the bottom, dosnt stick to the rays, they can still dig in it, and its not loud like gravel.

I would have to agree with the carib sea torpedo beach. Well worth it.

I use pool filter sand, no issues with rays or other fish, although with the current I have, I do have to smooth it out every time I do a waterchange since it slowly migrates to one side of the tank ... but this has benefits as well, since nothing gets trapped and rots since the sand is always being moved

Well I went with Target pool filter sand in my 450 gallon and noticed it's heavier but it hasn't made much of a difference and is still going up into the overflow box and into the filter socks. Still showing up in the washing machine when I wash the socks!
