In the water
I hate the look of the gravel in my tank and I want to get sand. Is there any type of REALLY cheep sand that I could use(beach or sand from a freshwater river). Can I put the sand in a tank that already has fish in it. Will suger sand clog my filter.

Pool filter sand hands down. just go to a pool supply store and ask for a bag or two depending how big your tank is. cheap to, last time i checked it was 10 dollars for a 50lb bag. color ranges from white, brown, tan or a mix of the three. the grain is large and heavy enough to be cleaned with a "vacuum". just make sure you rinse it before adding it to the tank.

oh btw. make sure you make this project a good week or two. if you take all your gravel out at once your tank will lose some bb colonies and go through a mini cycle.

Sand looks great in aquariums, but it's a pain to take care of. I remember in my 55 that I have TMS, the first time I tried vacuuming it I sucked out waaaaay too much of the sand. Not easy at all.

It all depends on how you maintain, really. Though Ancient above me made a very good comment on PFS. It's much easier to clean and is pretty cheap, just wash it out good ;)

i just went to a guys place lastnight who had 3 100+ gallon tanks with all sand right from a saltwater beach never washed the sand just through it in with his cichlids still in the tank ... he said he has had no problems with it

I just switched both my tanks over....used 10 parts white pool filter sand to 1 part blck aquarium sand.....i rinsed it in a bucket with a hose.....warmed it back up with tap water...lol The tanks were both clear within an hour.....i left the fish in....everyone is fine a week later.......My Bio350 sounded like a popcorn machine for a few hours but it too is fine!

if i do it i am going to turn my filters off. i have a big air stone in there and non of my fish are very big. how much should i get for a 55 i don't want to much but i do want to have lots of live plants

doing that is pretty bad, beach sand can be dirty and hold alott of micro-organisms that isnt suitable for freshwater fish

yes turn the filters off, you can use a funnel to direct the sand instead of pouring it directly. once the sand settles turn the filters back on
