Want to get sand

as for how much a 50lb bag should be just enough. when cleaning it just poor it in a bucket, stick a hose down to the bottom and turn the water on. agitate the sand to release the dust and once the water runs clear its ready to put into the tank.

sand blasting sand is super cheap, and looks great. make sure you get the finest that the masonry has and wash it really well

imo blasting sand is to fine. fish will kick it up and will damage the filters.

i switched my 125 gallon to pool filter sand last week, washed it really welll, put it in ,put the fish back in and turned all filters back on,it never even got cloudy.

I agree with the Pool filter sand, the Play sand is to fine of a grain. I have playsand in my 55 and dont like it at all, I have pool filter in my 110 and love it

i use tropical play sand from home depot. 3$ for a 50lb bag

There have been mixed reviews on playsand on multiple posts. it is very dirty and is very hard to clear out the dust(cloudiness).

Yes it's cheap, but for a substrate, there are better choices. I am using silica sand ($7 per bag of 100lbs @ Home Depot) in one of my tanks and it is OK, a bit fine, but at least it is a snap to clean (poop stays on top) and it settles quickly if disturbed by fish. Pool filter sand is the preferred choice as a substrate from the multiple postings of those who have tried many different sands.

'tropical' play sand might be different, but I have never heard of sand described as such...

i have used both play sand and pool filter sand. The secret to play sand is because it is not consistent in grade you actually have to poke a hole in the bag and find one that is a heavier grade.i have some that is the same as pool filter sand and some that was to fine, and they both where on the same pallet at home depot(but one of the workers there that raises african cichlids told me and it was true.(only problem is dont get caught poking holes in the bags, and it might take a while to find one, lol)
