I'm looking to start an eel tank. Not sure what eel to get but I really like the fire eel. I was wondering if anyone could name off some tankmates that would go well with one. I was also wondering about feeding. Is frozen fish such as talapia ok to feed. I would like to stay away from feeders as much as possible.

My fire eel eats market shrimp and thats it. Ive tried getting him on pellets and he never took them. I starved him for 2 weeks plus and got no love. So market shrimp when they get big enough to take them and other frozens when they are small

How expensive do the market shrimp get?

I'd imagine you can vary their diet with earthworms, peices of crab (if you are into spoiling your fish), tilapia, white fish, a lot of different things is much better than just one thing all the time.

ok thanks. What would wo well with the fire eel though? I was thinking ghost knife or something?

What size is the tank? exact dimesnions would help alot. If you're worried about the feed bill I would consider a Tire track, Armatus ( or unpatterned belly) Get just as big as Fire eels and tend to be alot less finicky in their feeding requirements. They are more liekly to take just abnout any foods. Fires tend to be almost strict invertibrate eaters ( worms, krill, shrimp, ect)

For companions I keep a fairly wide variety with my spineys. I keep Gar and a royal pleco with my fires, Bichir and pike cichlids with my tire track, a fantail goldfish and platies with my young leopard eels.

I would as a rule discourage cichlids, my tire track s about 12"+ and my pike cichlids are just large enough atm to be to big for him to eat. He's also very aggressive. more docile species of spineys do well with fish that are going to ignore them. I also avoid overly active bottom feeders like clown loaches and corys, but some people have no issues mixing these. I've seen fully grown fire eels in community fish type set-ups.

whatever you decide to do, my best advise is to get the eel first, and let it settle in a few weeks and eating solidly before adding more tank-mates. Getting most spineys to eat initially can be the hardest part in keeping these fish.

Im looking at a 250g. Black tahtian moon sand. 350 marineland bio-wheel filtration. I would like to actually put a clown knife fish in with it, but heard they eat a lot. I already have 6 rbp do not want to spend more money on them. If there is a nice fish that woul accept frozen fish like tilapia that could tank with the fire eel, that would be awesome.

I house my fire eel with two oscars (albino & tiger) 1 large pleco,1 red bellied pacu and the all get along fine but sometimes i will someone fighting but they do fine with eachother but every fish is different
