Want to start salt

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'v done alot of reading up on it already. Can I switch from fw to sw and back again or do i need to buy a new tank?

I changed over my 150 fresh 4 mths ago with fish only and a few live rock to get it going and bacter boost, I started with 8 damsels while going through the cycle period of 8 weeks or so and that is the most important thing is to let the tank cycle. I used plain sand. maybe you could cut down the cycle time with live sand, but just be patient and you will have a great time.

You can use the same tank and switch from fw to sw then back to fw, but I don't know who would want to. The tank just needs rinsed well when the changes are done. Some fw fish don't tolerate salt. No need to buy a new tank unless you want to upgrade size.

Thats always true, for the fact that if the original FW tank had a lot of copper added to it, then you try your hand at a Reef tank, you will find that the copper can leach from the silicone seams and kill your coral. Things like this happen and its one of those details that is often missed.

I would recommend a skimmer for the fact that a piece of equipment that can help keep your tank clean is worth it IMO. Ive been keeping SW for years now and have never done a tank without one. A good skimmer CAN go a long way to keeping your tank healthy.
