Want to try gars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lep looking forward to seeing that video. Saw, the length should be fine however the width is the one thing i am unsure about. I would say you would be ok however i will leave it to someone with my knowledge to answer that.
A 2ft width will last a very long time. Probably for life but a 30" width would be ideal. Most Florida/spotted gars don't exceed 24" in aquariums. I like the dimensions of that 300

Haha, looks like a i got a boat load of comments just now, no worries i dont mind. The new dimesions of the tank will7lx2wx2.5h actually, is this ok for gars? I do really want to have some gars still.

With those dimensions your tank is roughly 260 gallons

Gars are simple, especially Floridas. When they're small have food always around so they are always full, they do a lot of growing, mine grew an inch a week. When they're bigger just feed them enough to where they are fat and not like stick fish. Keep the temp at around 80 and keep the water clean. Always have a lid, if they can find space they'll jump through. Don't over think gars, they are easy to care for.

Lep, that is what i was thinking. 30 inches for the width ideal. Wheres that video of your tank chomping at the bit to see it! Saw i posted an update of my tank on another thread if you would like to see the setup i currently have for my gar. As stated Gar are not extremely difficult to take care of. However in my opinion it is best to overthink everything and run though every possible scenario with all variables to insure the success of keeping your fish. With every setup i have properly though through and planned i have had no issues. I learned my lesson when i first got into the hobby.

I'll upload it to YouTube tonight, I'll post the link. I agree with your over think idea. Don't just worry about what should happen but what could happen. Run 2 heaters, 2 filters, drip loops, all simple steps to increase safety.

So, is two feet not wide enough for life? Its the largest it can go in that space, its going to be custom made, i already made the height a bit higher so there can be more water, but im not sure if this will be best for bichirs... Or even gars.

Wow nice setup. I really like the placement of the driftwood. Your wisteria looks great. How many Watts was your lighting. Mine send to stay small none have reached that size yet. I believe i may have planted them the wrong way and have them growing sideways now. Saw i think yourd be ok with 24 inches. 30 is ideal however i believe the 24 would suffice.

In my opinion 2ft is good for life, more then likely you will have to gid rid of the gars before they outgrow that tank. Height is good to add for water volume and it makes a display tank. It will be fine for both
