Want to try gars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think the problem right now is they are so small, the only things they would be able to eat is very small guppy or platy fry. Ill put in some ghost shrimp and guppies but thats all i can do, i dont have another tank for breeding either unfortunately.

Try some of those 12 cent feeder guppies if you can get them from a place you trust.
Or WC minnows. That would also allow you to cull out the big ones.

When they are supper small you can use two tank nets to coral them in to one. takes about 5 minutes to get your feet wet and over 3 dozen of them.

Your Gars look good keep feeding them.

Thanks rich, but there not many freshwater minnow by me, theres a FW canal by me but i dont know how clean those little hybrid feeders would be.

Bait shop then when they get bigger if you can't get "safe" minnows.
also a 12 dollar 10 G and a 5 dollar airpump from wally world.

hit it with some of that instant cycle stuff. and get some guppies.
Most pet stores sell them pre sexed. males in one tank females in the other.

Just make a quick cheap homemade bio filter like you see in my pix.
the cheapest is a 16 oz plastic soda bottle and cotton balls.
Stuff the air line in it and you are done.

little more to it then what I typed, but you can be setup in like 2 or 3 days.
I'd be doing that but at 9 1/2 inches GARfield is to big for guppies.

How large are they? Gars are really hardy, I wouldn't worry to much about the safeness of things. Most of the time when I hear gars are sick I'm actually surprised, except for parasites.

If you decide to feed your fish feeder fish its always a good idea to put salt in the tank. Even feeder fish from trusted sources can be infected.

They are about 6", they seem to be really doing well :)

Ahhh you caved, you had to get the gars:) while your still feeding bloodworms toss in a pellet and see if they eat it. If they eat them now then I would use that as a staple. Gut loading a fish on pellets=big growth for almost all fish

Thanks guys, and ill try the pellets, thanks!
