I am wanting a bichir and know virtually nothing about them besides they look awesome.yes they are awesome
Are there any that would be good in a 29gal for life or if not life for several years?not really
they generally aggressive?generally no however there are exceptions
What do they eat? ( i have my other fish on hikari (sp?) shrimp pellets)read the primer in the sticky section
What are some cool ones that run under or around $30 US?polypterus senegalus
Would a tank with sand substrate, driftwood, and plants be ok?yes
My lfs has "dinosaur bichirs" and if i remember correctly they are like $10-$20.those would be Polypterus senegalus
Thanks everyone!

:iagree: A 29g would be ok for a little while depending on the size. Delhezi run under $30 as well.

Amazing fish my personal fav. Fun to watch and can be fed by hand but you will need a bigger tank at least 50gal but more like 75-100 depending on which you get.

get one they are hardy and rewarding fish several species to fit most any size tank and you have a viriety of tank mates to keep with them I perfer Bichir tanks go for it you want be sorry.

im never a fan of bichir before...since i met miss mass with all the poly she have...man now im up to 21 bichir already..is a must.

they are my personal favorites, but for a senegalus i think a 40 gal. is the min., oh and remember that the footprint is the most important part when choosing a bichir tank.

ok thanks guys...im prob going to be living at home next year and will upgrade tank sizes then and ill get some type of poly then. Thanks for all the help

A Senegal or "dinosaur" bichir would be a great starter bichir but they will need a bigger tank then a 29

oh and i went by the lfs and they have the "dinosaurs" that are about 3"-4" for $5

thats a good price.
bichirs are awesome.
used to have like 30 of them.
as said,dinosaurs are senegals.
get to 12 inches max.
usually 10 inches or there about.
eat basically anything.
some of my bichirs ate veggies.
what are the dimensions of the 29g?
senegals will live in a 15g,2 by 1 by 1.
but its not good at all.
i'd give a 2 by 1.5 by 1.5 at least.
bigger is definitely better.

get the dinosaur bichir...actually called senegal bichirs...they eat the sme things that your ropefish would, except that they get bulkier which means a bigger mouth when bigger.
