wanting to start a discus tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Are you going to be doing bb or planted? A general rule is 1 per 10 gallons. Of course that is considering for at least an 18" tank height. Water changes need to be a minimum of 1 per week.

What are you waiting for? Get cracking and post some pictures.:screwy:

I know the 10 gallon per Discus rule of thumb, but at my house we are going for a goal of 17 gallons per.

It seems to help with growth AND aggression.

Breeders in Asia throw the 10 Gallon Per discus rule of thumb out the window. They often pack their discus in there and they are all healthy!! But the secret is their heavy water change schedule. They do 100% WCs at least three times a day. Of course that is an extreme case but the worse thing you can do is over crowd discus and neglect your water changes. Once a week will not cut it. You can get away with a higher count if you keep a bare bottom tank and do frequent water changes.

If possible, your water should be aged, pre-treated, heated and aerated instead of water straight from tap.

a 25 gallon would be big enough to house 2 to full adult hood....accodring to jack wattley

Anything to improve water quality will be good for discus, so a UV sterilizer would be great.
