i have been keeping fish for just over 3 months. i have a community tank of 25 gallons containing 4 dalmation mollies, 2 red honey gourami, 2 dwarf red/blue gourami, 2 bronze cory's, 2 peppered cory's and 5 cherry barbs. i have a small tank waiting for molly fry when my female gives birth. i have been given a 2 foot tank, and it is, as yet, empty. i would like to try cichlids, silver dollar fish or something along those lines. what would you recommend?

2 foot by...what? do you know how many gallons? Or at least what are the full dimensions? Also are you talking South American Cichlids, American Cichlids, African Cichlids?

ok, its 61cm long, 30cm deep and 38cm high. no idea how many gallons it holds, i think about 20. no idea what kind of cichlids either

ok, sounds like around a 20gal. Technically you could put a few juv africans in there but I can tell you they won't be happy for long. A lot of them get around 6 inches or bigger and they like lots of room to swim. As for South Americans they can and will get even larger than that. I realize I'm speaking very generally, but the larger the fish you get usually the more room they need to swim. Silver Dollars also get that big or bigger. Think with any of those choices for your fish to be truely happy you are gonna want a bigger tank. But thats just my opinion. I am still new here and am anxious to see what other members might have to say about it. Whatever you decide good luck.

There are some smaller varieties of cichlids that you could probably keep in a 20g, but overall I'd recommend waiting until you have a larger tank for them.

If I were you, I'd take the mollies and cory's to your new smaller tank, and leave the gouramis and barbs where they are. What you have right now sounds like a LOT for a 25g tank. Are they all full grown? What filtration do you have? Have you been having problems with cloudy water?

all but the cherry barbs and 2 of the mollies are fully grown. the filtration is a fluval 3+ filter, and no, have had no problems with cloudy water at all. it doesnt look like there is a lot of fish in there, they have plenty of space. i had the water tested in the pet store yesterday and it was perfect, so i am happy. i cant see that 17 fish is too much for a 96 litre tank

You could try some apistogrammas.

OP has a normally stocked tank for a 25g. IMO move the current fish to the 20long and get a firemouth, male auratus, Convict cichlid or kribensis pair for the 25.
