Warming water for large water change

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How about filling a few 50 gallon water storage barrels and use those for your water changes (fill them back up after each WC)? The water would be room temp.

Im unable to use tap water here for large water changes at this time of year w/o heating the water first it would drop the water temp in the tank too much.. during the winter its smaller changes but more frequently during the week. Unless your breeding, or if your tank is grossly overstocked, over fed , mismanaged. Water changes are necessary but not at the level I've seen posted on most forums... if your community display tank needs a 50% water change a week to keep your fish healthy you may want to re examine your tank maintenance, feeding routine or stock levels ..however whatever has been working for you stick with it, I prefer to strive for efficiency of my time and costs ? Also note I'm maintaining a basement of tanks not a single, so a 50% water change would be close to 700 gals a week.

Every 2 weeks not every week is what I planned. I take care of a very large (12in) puffer and 2 plecos. They have very messy eating habits. I feed my puffer cray fish, muscles, shrimp, and he likes to leave remains behind and massive poops. 50% once every week is recommended by many as puffers are sensitive and have high bioloads. I realize I would do less for and more frequent overall for other fish, but it's easier for me since the tank is so tall that I need a step ladder to do it all at once and do the skimming of shells and such from the bottom. But yeah I should probably just do a low percent more frequent and skimming debris off the bottom once a month and scooping remains after each meals. But yeah I see a lot of techniques now.
