U did well, and I can say that knowing what happens next sucks, everyone ignore what I say,and then has the stupidity to say no one warned them when these terrible things happen, does anyone dare to ask what comes next,it's not pretty and it wont make u happy.....

Panem et circenses
Hello; bread and circus. How about rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic? Short term approach to issues with lots of distractions.

A key has been the reduction of overall human population size. This has not happened and the population continues to increase. Tipping points. Carrying capacity. I did favor ZPG and had hoped to find a way to encourage voluntary reductions in the population growth rate. Neither worked out.

I find it interesting to follow discussions on these forums about stocking densities in aquaria. Recently was in a heated discussion with some forum members in a thread. One insisted that a single silver arrowana needs a 300 gallon tank. I have no problem with that as I have not kept the species. I often wonder if the same concept of high population density is ever applied to the human population and our tank (the earth)

I use to keep my decision to be childless to myself. Came a time when I sensed the it was time to put the notion of being childless out. My thinking being that if others knew of someone taking that path and seeing some of the benefits, they might give it some thought. I had though that even if few actually considered that lifestyle then at least my effort would be appreciated. Not so. I have received more negative feedback and almost no appreciation.

I have become more comfortable with the decision with time. I do not have the worries I see in my friends with children and grandchildren. I did not have during my life and do not now have the financial drain I see in several friends due to their children and grandchildren.

One friend from high school has a girlfriend who is a top nurse with three children. She was shocked to a degree that a retired Kentucky school teacher (me) is able to afford a more comfortable life style than she can. Her children have been and continue to be a money drain. She is still paying college loans for her youngest.

I understand that parents love their children. (At least many do. By teaching and driving a school bus in the hills of Appalachia I saw some evidence that some "love" the children received was not worth having.) I can only report that the feeling parents tell me of having about their children is something I did not experience, so I do not miss it. I currently watch one of my remaining close friends from my childhood trying to help his struggling children and being financially strapped by the effort. I confess being relieved that I am not in that position. I am to deliver a bed and chair to one of his kids with my truck this afternoon. Glad to help, but I will not be sleepless with worry tonight.

We live in a dieing, decaying world. I wonder if a scuttled nuclear sub would cause a warm spot. God only knows how many tons of $gold we spent. Blowing up the oceans, atolls and dumping garbage at sea.
My hope is found in a sincere reading of the bible. It was once in eat drink and be merry since we're just going to die.

hello; Some find comfort with the various faiths. An after life in a better place? Does not do much for our situation now.

A negative has been some major faiths push for more population and place restrictions on effective birth control. One of my relatives married into and adopted such practices. She is now struggling with four children.

I considered going the "eat, drink and be merry", live for today or such a lifestyle. After I studied the dogmas of several of the established faiths, I decided to go for a lifestyle of reduced impact. Having gained an understanding of some of the impacts imposed on out environment, it seems wrong to adopt a to heck with it lifestyle. I pollute much less than I can afford to. I tend to conserve resources beyond what my neighbors and family are willing to do. I have central air in the current house but only run it a few nights when it is too hot to sleep. My home is often too cool in the winter months to suit many visitors. Most around me run the AC all the time and keep the temps up to t-shirt level during the winter.

I guess my take is that once I gained the knowledge and a level of understanding of human population impact on the environment, it would be "sin like" to ignore what I have learned and live a consumption lifestyle that is in excess. I do not know if I will be "judged" for my lifestyle as such. I do know that having a code to live by seems important. There is some satisfaction in the idea of leaving the place where I live in as good as condition as possible.

With the understanding I must consume to live and thus will have some impact, I hope to mitigate my impact a bit. Do not get me wrong. I consume in the western lifestyle and have much more than just basic needs.

Many people either deny the overwhelming evidence or simply say if the worlds gonna end why shouldn't I indulge myself?,but the way I see it,we should at least try,and if what makes us worthy of a better place if we don't take care of the first one?,I myself worry about what happens,as remaining neutral is not truly an option here. I too will not have children, and congratulate u on your wisdom skl47. I also don't understand women who cry about not being able to get pregnant when there r millions of orphans for adoption.

We will need open borders, a global minimum wage, a health care system that is not for profit. Tax laws that support the over achiever.
One language. Serious consequences for the above the law, outlaws. A bunch of volunteer politicians that are in it for civic duty. Sending all the nukes into deep outer space. Getting all the youth to graduate high school.
I used to drink a lot of wiskey. I don't any more. So anything is possible.
The warming oceans, are one thing. Here in Iowa some years we are very close to a major drought. The rivers are full of nitrates, as the soil has lost its fertility. Which requires a lot of ammonia fertilizers, to keep the farm profitable.
Unless your amish, around here. The million dollar impliments required for farming , have become unrepairable, with basic mechanical aptitude.

Hello; before I comment on the above quotes may I ask that you expand a bit on these views. Not sure I follow where you are going with these statements and do not want to respond out of context.

Getting all the youth to graduate high school

Hello; I have some experience in the public schools. In the states where I taught students who kept attending school will be allowed to graduate. The issue, as I saw it, was that the students do not need to meet any practical standard of achievement. We called it social promotion among other things. I have known many with high school diplomas who were likely not educated much above a fourth grade level. I guess my point being that a diploma should not be just for time served, but for having actually having gained an education that can be useful in the real world.

S skjl47 In regard to your earlier comment (did not want to include a lenghty quote here) I absolutely agree with your stance of having no children. I don't want any either. The way I see it, having no children not only allows to have a more free, financially easy lifestyle, but also to have less of a guilty conscience to the world itself.

For example: Yes, I might eat meat and I might (hopefully one day) drive a fast car that doesn't get too many MPG but at least I'm not putting 2 more people in the world who, in turn, will ruin the planet by eating meat and driving cars etc.

Bit of a whacky explanation but I hope you see what I mean.

P.S I'm still young so I could change my mind about having children but right now I am adamant I want none.
