I’ve have that heater, I’ve actually got 3 of them,I’ve had them for years . I just goes to show that their is good ones and bad ones.sorry to see you got a bad one.

I'm not particularly surprised that didn't trip the GFCI. There wouldn't have been any short to ground, and barely if any electricity would have been going through the water rather than through the heating element.
I had a Jager with an inch or so of water in it. Worked fine for years boiling the water every time it turned on.

It's definitely a defective product. The thing is a lot of the products sold on eBay are still not genuinely specified by the seller or tested for quality control as a lot of the products sold on eBay are Chinese knock off. I have had bad experiences with cheaper heaters and pumps. I now get all my stuff from my local pet store even though I'm paying few quid extra.
