Last weekend, my power went out due to irene. When I went to sleep that night, the 125 gallon SW had 125 gallons in it. In the morning, it had about 30 gallons in it :WHOA:! I had found that one of my 2 Fluval 404s had popped open when the power went out, and all of the water went into my basement. The old carpeting was ruined, and the new stuff may cost thousands!

:wall:

However, i did get an FX5!

You can claim the home insurance to pay for the damage if you had insurance. If it was a newer filter, you can claim Fluval unless it was human error. They should have product liability insurance. Good Luck.

Sorry to hear that, did you lose any of your stock? But as long as insurance is covering the damage and you get an Fx5 out of the deal it's not a total loss. One question for you though. Seeing as to how I'm using a 405 right now I'm very curious to know exactly how a power surge caused one of your filters to open.

I'm going to bet on a build up of hydrogen sulfide gas from the die off of the bacteria. We lose power here in Orllando at least once a week and none of my filter ever popped open from just restarting. Just my .02

i believe the power surge caused the pump to gain pressure and it couldnt get the water out fast enough. it was definately not left open because i hadn't opened it for about 2 weeks.

scary, I only use the 5 series bc i had a similar problem where it blew the seal and drained the tank.

I tested mine by crimping off the outlet hose and killed the power for a few minutes and restarted it and nothing. Just my .02

My power went out for an entire day after the recent snow storm and I have two 405's. I have such a hard time opening them unclasped, so find it hard to believe that a 404 opened on it own. Even if there was a gas build up it would escape through the hoses.
